This week I saw a job title, ‘discovery project manager’, advertised in jobserve. I am indeed curious as I am an IT Project Manager/Consultant. Perhaps I will also add ‘ediscovery’ to my list of acquired ‘knowledge’. Over the next couple of weeks I will explore these two domains.

E Discovery requires a lot of general law/litigation knowledge and general I T knowledge. A lot of vendors (600+) offer services to in house counsel and lawfirms. It’s fast paced, ever changing, and day by day detail planning, due to the nature of the work. Since it’s an emerging industry, it seems like over half of E Discovery project managers have a legal background. Most ‘legal tech’ places don’t have traditional PMI type project management in place either, because many e discovery vendors emerged out of operational paper/copy shops. For me, it’s proving to be a very emerging/niche project management opportunity. Computer forensics are becoming more pertinent to a lot of e discovery services, too, due to preserving file’s metadata and recovering deleted files.
I wonder whether there is a demand for Project Managers who have no legal background or experience in eDiscovery.
